The pioneer Antonio Viola, from Peniche, was the first to bring a dog to Canada from Portugal in 1963—his beloved Peugeot.

Peugeot the dog arrived with his owner on the Canadian Pacific the second time that Antonio moved to Canada. Since Peugeot was not used to harsh Canadian winters, he would curl up his feet and refuse to go for a walk, which led Antonio to buy him booties to protect his paws from the cold and snow.

Peugeot was loved by many, as he was very friendly and playful—whenever someone would give him some change, he would immediately want to buy a Portuguese custard tart for himself. Back in Peniche, he would love to ride alongside Antonio in his scooter.

In the photo, Michael, Antonio’s son, plays with his pet.
