The Canadian artist Ken Flynn has created a 125 page graphic novel about his grandfather, José Pires, and his journey of immigrating to Canada from the Azores.
The Average José: An Immigration Story, combines cartoon art, realistic sketches, and film photography to illustrate the hardships José experienced while starting a life in a new place without any money, a job, or knowledge of the English language, while also capturing how he persevered through it all with integrity and grace.
